I generally play 3-5 NL, and dropped to 1-2 in a couple recent trips to NV. (couldn't find anything bigger in Reno, and didn't take enough cash to Vegas) I know what you mean about not caring about your buy-in at that level, and I didn't drop nearly as far as you did coming from the 5-10 game. So I wouldn't recommend dropping to the 1-2 to find excitement. For me at least it was quite the opposite.
I haven't had time for the long drive and long sessions in my regular game lately so I have been really enjoying playing small crap shoot tourneys. I have just been challenging myself to outplay certain players every time I go and looking for a different angle to challenge myself other than just winning. Side bets with other players have added to the fun level again.
