My standard home game is 10-12 people .25/.50, and I use this breakdown.

125 - .25
225 - $1
125 - $5
25 - $25

This 500-piece set is good for every game we've played, and there can be upwards of $600 on the table in this little game, so it works pretty well. I've never had to break out more than 3-4 of the $25s. A starting $50 buy-in looks like this.

8 - .25
28 - $1
4 - $5

Almost all rebuys are in $5 chips, and they get into play pretty quickly.
