Biggest pot I've ever been bad-beat out of

I still can't even believe this happened. Tonight at a game my friend called me in to play at, I had never been there before. Honest people, nothing fishy, just unlucky I guess. I want to puke though.

7-handed, I'm playing LAG, one other LAG, 3 loose passive, 2 tight aggressive. $1/$2, I have $180 in front of me, villain has $165. Villain is one of the passive players, but is kind of annoyed at how much I am raising.

Hero is dealt: [ ] in seat 4 (first position for this hand)

Hero raises to $10
Seats 5, 6, 7, and 2 fold
Seat 1 (Button) calls
Seat 3 - Villain (BB) calls

Flop:

Villain leads out with a $12 bet. I decide to raise to $40 instead of slowplaying (I had been caught in a couple of re-steals.) Button calls. Villain goes all-in over the top of me (as I jump for joy in my head) - and I call as he is counting his chips (I only announced call, I had him covered by $15) - he announces that he had $143 total after the flop, I put in my other $103. Button goes into the tank for about two/three minutes.. and says "fold" and turns over:

I'm in a pretty good mood, and flip over my cards to reveal top set. Villain says "I've got outs" but will not turn over his hand.

Turn:
River:

He says "quads" - and a part of me dies inside. Sure enough, he flips over:

I didn't speak a single word the rest of the night. I pulled another $50 out of my pocket and played pretty tight for a few minutes, then decided to leave.

I don't think I want to play poker for a while.

dude, youre taking those beats too hard... not to diminish your pain. i feel it too when i get sucked out on... but you have to stick to your game.

what are you going to do? lay down a set of qs vs. set of 9s? he's got one out!! you call that all day until you go broke..

Re: Biggest pot I've ever been bad-beat out of

Not nice but it will happen 1 in 23 times (I guess you'll be waiting most of your poker career for the other 22 in your favour though!)

His call pre-flop was a little speculative though, but for poker at my low level the implied odds are pretty big even with only 2 callers.

You're right, you did have him. Him moving in pretty much put a big red light over his head saying 'trips' and not the 10-J straight draw.

Can't see why you left though, a bad beat's a bad beat, unless you thought you were going to go into melt down mode. Bit churlish of him not flipping his cards, you did call him and paid for that priviledge. It was your first night at the game, I would have stuck around.

Here's one of mine, me 88, villain 55 flop 8xx, me moves in - re-raised all-n so I call. Turn 5, river 5. Hero loses out to quads, something like a 1000-1 draw? 45/2*45/1 = 1,012.

Get back on the horse - you know you want to - you can make it your mission to break him now!

I say cheer up. At least your villain thought he had the best hand at the time, and wasn't on a straight draw.

Re: Biggest pot I've ever been bad-beat out of

Last night I was up about $120 in our little .25/.50 game and was rivered with big pairs 3 times to lose it all.

I gave one beat to Matthew...he may write about it... So I'm down to my last $17 or $18 and we're getting close to ending the 6 hour session, I've been pummelled on the river a few times, but I'm up overall for the night since I split first in the tourney earlier. Wer'e five handed and I look down at 9,9 and raise to $3 or $4 (it was late I forget), Matthew raises to like $15 basically putting me all-in, I put in my last $15.50 and he flips up his aces, D'oh! well my hopes got up on the flop...it comes 7,8,10...yeehaw, OUTS! I've got 8 straight draws and two 9's I can catch.

Turn Ace...ARGH! Giving Matt trip A's.

River 6...sorry Matt...well sort of. I end the night down $30 in the cash game and up $60 in tourney...oh well, 6 hours of poker and I made about $30...At least I got to play all night.

Re: Biggest pot I've ever been bad-beat out of

I guess I took it harder because it's a lot of money for me. I work two dead-end minimum wage jobs, and I never think about the money before, or while I'm at the poker table. Afterwards though, losing that money is a pretty big hit to me.

I don't really blame the guy who did it, he wasn't a big arse about it, didn't jump up and down or celebrate or anything..and I can't really blame him for being in the pot, and hitting his miracle. It just sucks when it happens. I'm not really a big person to go on tilt, but I handle it the opposite way. When I do go on tilt, I play pretty close to the vest.

I could have spent all that money on chips! I probably could have gotten a little of it back, but I realized after I bought in with that other $50 that I couldn't really afford to lose it, so I pulled it back out.

Hopefully I get some chips in the mail to cheer me up. Thanks for the support guys.

Re: Biggest pot I've ever been bad-beat out of

5/5 pot limit holdem - I raise to $20 preflop with AKs in SB - 5 players see the flop - $100 in pot - flop comes 10-Q-2 spades giving me nut flush with gut shot redraw to the royal flush. I check. Loose aggressive player bets $100 - even more loose aggressive player raises $200 - now $400 in pot. Action comes to me, I reraise $400, both players call. Now $1200 in pot. Turn comes 3s - I go all in for remaining $1000 - first player folds - second player calls instantly. I show nut flush, he shows 2 pair Q-2. River comes 2d.

Re: Biggest pot I've ever been bad-beat out of

Brett,
I know how you feel, one of my first big pots, almost $400 I lost when my flopped set of 10's was rivered by the fourth 4. Took me about 2 weeks to get back online and play again. It's still my worst beat to date and hopefully will stay that way.

In terms of makin money, here is an idea. I do sports officiating on almost a full time basis. I referee about 7 sports year round. Depending on the sport and level I make on average about $30 an hour. Working my first college lacrosse game on saturday. Pay is $150 for a 2 hour game. A lot of the youth games are paid in cash on the spot. During hockey season there are times when I make close to $500 in a weekend. People are always looking for officials. PM me if your interested and would like some more info.

Get back to the tables and play your game, the money will return.

Take care,
Sharky
