I don't understand why people want to buy 25- and 50-cent chips. With inflation they are going to be obselete very soon. I would rather have some non-denominational chips as a substitute for quarters and fifties.

I'm from the UK so all the denoms are worth twice as much assuming that 25c = 25p. So they are needed for my game.

I agree that there is not much use for .25 or .50 chips. I find that blinds of 1/2 for live game are low and boring. In this days of inflation, a blind of 1/2 is just like playing with pennies when I was in my 20's. If you play that low just use quarters of non denoms. When the chip cost more than what is printed, then it does not make sense.

If I'm going to spend lotsa money on expensive chips, might as well go all the way. Fractionals need love too.

Fractionals are great. If you play 1/2 NLHE then you know you're going to buyin for at least 100-200$ and with rebuys more. Alot of people want to play poker and don't mind losing 20 or 40 bucks but would get seriously nicked for 1-2 hundred or more. People play tournaments with 20,40,100$ buyins for the same reason. Its entertainment! Most of us are not Pro players and were not making a living playing. Fractionals let you have a friendly cash game. With 25/50 cent blinds a 25-50$ buyin can get you started on maybe a couple hours of poker; everybody has fun; you can pretend you're Kid Poker and if you loose no big deal. Naturally, guys that want to play for bigger stakes can or they can go to the Casinos. I love factionals. The best part is you don't have to match the set. If you've got 200-300 25cent chips you can hook them up with the 1's and 5's from your clay set and everythings cool. Mixing fractions from one set to another apparently is not a faux pais.

The only thing I don't care for when usign my fractional chips is when I have to say initally....."I'll raise you fifty cents" Forget about intimidation. Other than that I do like the fact that we can play $10 games with actual values.

I think the best answer it that it's the stakes that people play for. We had .25 cent chips in our games 20 years ago, and we still do today. I'm guessing in another 20 years, there will still be people playing with amounts that include .25/.50. It's just a matter of where that .25/.50 falls in the range of stakes. Twenty years ago it was towards the high end, now it's towards the low end for a lot of folks, but even 10-20 years from now there will still be college kids playing for quarters.
And yes, it does give us another reason to buy sweet loooking chips! | | |
