Open up or stay the course?

I decided to put some additional money into Poker Stars. I figured I would jump into the cash games. I only had time to play for an hour plus today and played very few hands. Below are some of the hands I played and how I played them. I'm looking to see if the hands were played well or if I could have played them differently. I mostly played position, though I did come in early (raise) once with A/K.

Also, should I open up my game or play somewhat tight/aggressive?

Lastly, what is a good book on cash games?

I suggest one hand per post, and leave out the results.

Hand one, why did you call the turn?

Hand 2, std.

Hand 3, raise preflop, bet the pot on the river.

Hand 4, I probably bet closer to pot, otherwise std.

Well, in the other 2 hands bigdaddy was in, he folded when all he had to do was call the BB. I'd say he could definitely have an ace or a big pair.

Now I have to ask: you did put royalaa101 on your buddy list, right?

Hand 2: Standard

Hand 3: Raise preflop. Rive I raise it to 3/4-pot

Hand 4: I lead for $8 or approx 3/4 pot. Otherwise looks good.

On hand one, I didn't think he hit the King, so I bet out since it was checked to me. He (royalwithcheese) called. Turn he bet $1 and I thought of reraising him but didn't now know if he had had a weak King. I also thought he may have been chasing the flush. So I just called. On the river, I believed he was just attempting to steal as he missed his flush and called. It turned out he missed his straight.

Hand three: Royal again limps in with the best hand. If I raise (now that I know what he has) he pushes all in. Now I know I'm only out $3 or $4 if I fold but would you call his all in with A/Q unsuited? He limped in a few times with the best hand and I won some pots off him. Later on he just pushed all in with any ace rag and lucked out twice. You are correct that I should have raised but I had a feeling.

For a NL book, I can suggest "NL Holdem, Theory and Practice" by Ed Miller, Sklansky. Harrington is suppose to be coming out with a NL cash game book soon.

I learned a little more about bigdaddy and he either had a/rag or he made a nice bluff on my weak continuation bet.

As or putting royal on my buddy list, I think some of them should put me on theirs, I still have a long way to go in Cash games and in poker in general.

Hand 3: wimp > me. In a SNG in that position, I'm absolutley raising but for whatever reason I wimped out. I had a feeling before the flop and played the hand to cautiously.

Thanks dad604, I will be hitting the book store tomorrow and will look for it. I was just going to ask that question again.

Ur welcome. If you find any other good NL cash game book, let me know. NLH, T+H was the only good NL cash book I have came across. That is why I will be interested in Harrington's book when it comes out. Ed Miller's "Getting Started in Holdem" has a short section NL but it is very elementary geared towards the very basic beginner.

On hand one I would have raised OTB against an unknown limper, calling isn't bad but not my normal play there.

Excellent book. Haven't heard about Harrington's but I'll def. pick it up if he does.
