`ash,

That is a very interesting picture and an even more interesting question. Thanks for sharing. I've never seen a light pink WSOP chip w/ green edge spots before. The picture has a 2003 copyright mark on it and from the looks of the other chips I'd say that is probably the year it was taken. The blue 1K chip was used for quite a few years (early 90s until 2003) however the pink 10K chip and the orange 5K chip were only used from 2000 - 2003. I am familar with the lower denomination chips used in that time era (I have them in my colllection) so my initial guess would be that it might be the 25K chip. In 2003 they did introduce a 25K chip (only used for that year) however if my memory serves me correctly I thought it was bright red not light pink. That is the only chip from that time era missing from my collection so I'm not positive of its color. Some searching on google & flickr or maybe re-watching the 2003 WSOP on DVD might answer the question of whether it is the 25K one.

One thing I noticed right away was that the arrangement of the chips in your picture was very unusual. It is normally protocol in any tournament (and especially for the WSOP) for the higher denomination chips to be stacked in front of the lower denomination ones. However in this picture the 1K blue chips and the 5K orange chips are stacked in front of the 10K pink chips. A player who stacked his chips this way would probably be told to get the higher denomination ones in front ASAP. And, with the big stacks of 5K & 10K chips I'd say this picture would have been taken pretty deep in the tournament. So, from the stacking of the chips I'm guessing it could also be a promo picture. It was not unusual for non-tournament chips to be used in promo pictures. They used Gambler's General store chips and gift shop chips in a lot of the ESPN promos on TV. I do have a friend who has dealt and been a floorman in the WSOP for around 20 years so I'll send him a copy of the picture to get his input on it. I'll let you know if I find anything out.

Regards,
akslcdv
