Newbie Custom Question (but I did my homework!) - ChipTalk.net

Great site guys.

I have a small set of the WSOP ceramics from chipco for tournys. I "want" a bigger, better set for larger games plus cash.

After ordering a ton of samples I've found that my favorite two chips feel wise are the TR King Deadwoods and the Paulson Top Hat and Kane. No surprises there.

I've also decided that I like solids. I'm toying with the idea of one edge spot mixed in but basically i'm looking to have big stacks of hot stamped classic solid chips with my family name and denoms. I understand the denom danger but since I plan on loading up on 5's and 100's my kid will have to be playing $25-$50 NL cash home games to outgrow these. If he is then he can buy new chips.

So, as I peruse my options I see that

a) TR King is sadly OOB. I guess i won't be getting these.. http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/custom...-tr-kings.html

b) ASM seems to only hotstamp the A molds. bummer. Still an option but price wise a bit high. I've also had a hard time finding any pics of someone who has posted hot stamped ASM solids. (anyone?)

While I like most everything about these they do seem a bit light as I shuffle and handle them. They also have ridges around the edges on some of the samples. Is this normal? In the custom clay gallery 2_hotty posted the Club 6 custom hot stamped solids. This is the closest I've seen to what I want. What kind of time frame am I looking at for something like that? price?

sorry for the long winded. Just looking to get feedback from the local experts.

BC offers a heavier version of their mold, for an extra 5 cents a chip.

I believe the time frame is 6-8 weeks.

I've only got three BCC samples and they all have ridges around the outside of the chips. I don't mind these as I feel they improve handling and make your chip tricks a bit easier. It is worth mentioning the BCC chips seem to get better as you play with them.

Welcome aboard. Seems you're off on the right foot, getting samples. I can't really say that I took that route. I went straigt for the Paulson. I read up on them and a lot of the feedback said they were the best. I figured it was between Bud jones and Paulsons, and most casinos I knew about used Paulsons. So I dove in there first and made that the standard.

All I can say is be carefule with this chip collecting thing. At first you might mave you sights on building a certain set, then you may start justifying to yourself that you may need another. Set your standards as to what you want to get out of this and try to maintain that, otherwise you can be overcomed by the madness.

A friend, Ranman, has about 600 solid hotstamped BCC. These are incredible chips. They stack like crazy. The first night we used them the were a bit hard to shuffle, but like Brewster said they get better with age. I don't know if they are the heavy or light versions. To me it doesn't matter much. I need at least 10 in my hand to feel the difference a gram per chip makes. You have more color options with BCC than ASM.

Patcho, when you say "ridges," are you refering to the area around the recess for the inlay. If so, I like this. It adds a little extra protection for the hotstamp and makes handling easier.

FYI, the founders of Paulson, the Endy family, now run BCC. If you like the hardness of TR King, you will probably prefer BCC, since ASM are a bit softer than both.

If you want custom chips go BCC. Otherwise search around for some solid Paulsons retired from casinos. Realize though, if you take this route you may go senile before you find the colors you want in the quantity you want for a price you are willing to pay.

I think ASM's are harder than TR Kings when I compare my custom ASM's to a set of TR King Casbah clubs I have. TR King is in my opinion much closer to the Paulson clay feel than any of the others you mention and softer than ASM and BCC chips.

ASM and BCC's both have harder clay and can be seen as somewhat lighter, but once you get used to them they are both excellent chip manufacturer's and you'll be very happy with either of these as your choice for customs.

I think the ridges you speak of on the outside rim of the chip(side if you are looking at a stack, are normal for BCC's and Paulson's. TR King and ASM both grind the outside rim of the chip and are smoother(at least my ASM's look like they were ground to make them smooth), just a difference in manufacturing I believe.

Welcome to the forum, getting samples is the right thing to do. Whatever suits you is the best decision.

TRKs are definitely softer than ASM & BCC. Those two are pretty well tied for hardness I think.

For a picture of some hotstamped A-mold ASMs, do a search in the M2M forum. There was someone selling a set a month or two ago and it looked pretty sweet.

Good to know. I only have one TRK for comparison. It fooled me.

The heavy bcc chips are really nice, IMO. I'd contact them via phone and talk to them about weight.

I'm like them more than ASM but it's just an opinion, I have nothing concrete to back up that opinion.

oh yeah... check out the t-mold solids at holdempokerchips.com. I believe that BCC will accept them back from mspatton to hotstamp them for a customer. Be forewarned... *any* hotstamper is only going to accept brand new chips. Not a single game, shuffle or fingerprint. If it were me, I'd have to have the retailer send it directly to the hotstamper, I wouldn't be able to keep my grubby paws off of them

contact mspatton (ct.net sponsor) and just let him know, he may have some other suggestions.
