I'll bet if you went to a specialty wood store, you might even find the perfect molding that didn't require trimming...

Have you given any thought to using dowels to permanently join the two pieces? Also, just like you are trimming the edges, you could trim the bottom, to make the drawers shallower...be careful about getting too close, though, you don't want to wood to fail... (Viagra won't work for this project!)
