For instance what is this edge spot called?
7thSeat... Although not on-line, the most comprehensive compendium of chip/check inserts ("edge spots" as some call them) is a book called:

"A Collector's Guide to Nevada Gaming Checks & Chips" by Howard W. Herz and Kregg L. Herz. "Howdy" and his wife Kregg are longtime members of the CC&GTCC and in fact Howdy is one of only 14 CC&GTCC members to be recognized by the Club as Hall of Fame members.

This is because Howdy was long ago involved with an early on effort to document all of the checks and chips of Nevada. The short story is that Harvey Gross (yes, the "Harvey" of Lake Tahoe's Harvey casino) was a coin collector. Howdy worked for Harvey and convinced Harvey to commission (and collect) all examples of checks and chips of Nevada casinos as a function of Harvey's Casino and Resort. This was in 1965.

The acquired chips/checks were catalogued by Howdy and both Kregg and Howdy researched the manufacturing and distribution of casino chips/checks from any and all companys that sold to Nevada gaming operations.

Each manufacturer had their own proprietary method of describing and cataloging their chips/checks and there was no single uniform method. What Howdy did was to create a reference system, which of course is not used every where, but his end result is contained in 28 introduction pages (w/pictures and drawings) of his Guide.

Included are clay composite checks/chips made by a variety companies (Mason, HC Edwards, Marion, Hunt, Paul-Son, and more) using a notched slug process (further detailed in the book), like the Golden Nugget shown in your post. That insert pattern is described as 3 1/2in. Meaning that there are three overall inserts (beige in this instance), measuring 1/2" long at the edge and that each overall insert has an 'inset' insert (red in this instance).

Although this Nevada-only price guide is now dated (1995) it remains a fantastic reference work of inserts, as well as inlays and chip/check slug properties, i.e., 1/2 pie, 1/4 pie, dovetail, etc.

Last time I was at Gambler's General Store it was in stock. It is also available at various web-sites AND, it is available for loan from the CC&GTCC Library to CC&GTCC Members.

Included manufacturers are: Chipco (not much there for inserts), Bud Jones (their entire variety!), B&G, Langworthy and RTP). The Dedication gives thanks to many, including Paul and Eric Endy, Bud Jones, The Burt Company, and John Kendall (Chipco).

I highly recommend getting this book for the reference material alone!
