my thinking was that for the chips i would be using ($5 -$500) most for tourneys, i would make the spots all consistent with eachother as far as width of each group of spots and number of groups, but vary them with different numbers within each edge spot group. what i mean is that the $5, $25, $100, and $500 spots would all take up the same space of the chip (or close to it), but the $5 spot would be all one color, $25 spot two colors, $100 spot three colors, and the $500 spot two colors with base color seperating them. then let the $1000 and $5000 chips be the more unique spot configs. i just didn't want to get too acrossed the board with spots, since i have a feeling most people are going to want to use many different shaped inlays. just dont want the set to end up being way too busy.
