You're not going to need the $500 chips. For cash games of $50 - $1000 buy-ins with 10 players I would buy:

150 x $1
200 x $5
150 x $25
100 x $100

That's $15,000 in chips which will be more than enough, and you can give each player 15 or 20 $1 chips which will cover enough rounds of blinds.

If you want some $500s just for the sake of it, get 20 or so and get fewer $100s
