Marvel Paulsons - Spider Man / Hulk / Wolverine - still available

As nobody wanted the complete set, I’m breaking it up for sale and am offering the individual chips here to members before tackling eBay. The chips are $13 each here but will be more if I go to feeBay.

ORIGINAL PHOTO:

HERE ARE THE NEW PHOTOS, WHICH I REALIZED I COULD ADD HERE SO PEOPLE DON"T HAVE TO GO TO THE LATER POST IN WHICH I ADDED THEM . When they open in ImageShack, click on them again to enlarge for detail:

Sets of three (1 Spider Man /1 Hulk / and 1 Wolverine ) are $39 plus shipping.

Insured signature mail for a set of three costs [ see below posting #27 for updated costs to various countries - I've now reduced packaging weights to get cheaper postage but kept the level of protection] [Also note that I'm not just offering sample sets of three but am willing to mix up the distribution - Spider Man being the most popular so far.]

If people are interested in a set of 80 in an original Marvel box (albeit a somewhat damaged box) or other amounts please PM me and we can figure out shipping etc.

GREAT FOR YOUR FAVOURITE CHIPPERS, PAULSON COLLECTORS, POKER BUDDIES, SUPER-HERO FANS OR MARVEL COMICS FANS !!

For those of you who haven’t seen the earlier threads, here’s a recap of some background from an earlier post (apologies to those who have already seen this) followed by a link:

I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and had the chance to buy some of these chips before they disappeared. They were only made in a very limited number - 200 sets of 80 chips each. Each set contained 40 Spider Man chips, 20 Hulks and twenty Wolverines. The sets were sold in plastic boxes with Marvel graphics printed on them but the plastic was very thin and brittle and every box I saw in the stores was cracked - usually in a number of places.

Each set had a retail price of $159.99 and some stores broke up some of the sets and sold them individually in clear vinyl pouches for $6.95 each.

Dufferin Games Ltd. had a worldwide licensing agreement with Marvel Enterprises, Inc. that was announced on July 19, 2001. They were one of the few places in Canada that sold any kind of good quality poker chips at the time and the only one I have ever heard of that sold any Paulson chips - and then only these Marvel ones. They started selling the chips in 2002. They were snapped up by people willing to pay to get real Paulsons to make sets for home games.

Not long after they entered the agreement with Marvel and produced the set of chips, the Dufferin Games chain of 21 stores went bankrupt and was closed, meaning that no more chips were produced. That means that there are only 8000 of the Spider Man chips and 4000 each of the Hulks and Wolverines in existence worldwide, which is why you see them so rarely. I think most of them went into sets for home games, which means that we are not likely to see them for sale very often.

They really are beautiful chips and it is amazing that Paulson produced such a limited run, but maybe they were hoping to land a much bigger re-order from Dufferin and Marvel when they sold out of them.

I also have printouts of a press release outlining the deal between Dufferin and Marvel in 2001 and a press release from Dufferin games dated September 9th, 2002 that promotes their "Annual Top Ten Gift Suggestions for 2002", which included the $159.99 sets of chips."

The edges of the Spiderman chips and the edgespots really light up under ultra violet light. I took the chips with me to an indoor blacklight mini-putt with my eight-year-old on the weekend and the spideys are quite bright. The edgespots are quite different from the standard ones that Paulson now seems limited to in their production of the non-casino chips that they have been producing.

Please ask any questions you have or PM me.

Best regards,

northernferg
