It took 2.5 months.
There was a period of about 2 weeks between me sending the artwork to the graphic designer, to me approving it. Originally, I had the color picture and the text on the same graphic, and thought I would just have that on both sides. The designer told me that either the color background of the graphic, or the text below it, would have to go. I didn't want either to go, so I suggested that we do two sides - one with text, one with the full graphic, and we went back and forth.
So three months between me sending the graphic to the designer and me opening up my boxes o' chips. Two and a half months between placing the order and opening up my boxes o' chips. And probably four months between me deciding "To heck with it, I'm going to DO THIS, by cracky!" and opening up my boxes o' chips.
I would advise you or ANYONE to take your time on the initial design phase. I wanted (and you will want) your chips to arrive as soon as possible, and I was tempted (and you will be tempted) to try to get your design done as quickly as you can. Remember that you are probably not going to be buying a second set - these will be your chips for a very long time (and if your daughter is going to be freeing peasants, they will be hers, too) so you want to take the time to do it right. Run your design past your artistic friends. Bounce color ideas off of people. Look at chip pics in this forum, the 2+2 forum, and any other forum with chip pics.
One thing that helped me (when selecting colors) was "Will I still like this in 5 years?" I wound up going with a more muted color scheme than I had started with, because I thought that in 5 years, I may be less flamboyant than I am now, and it would have been horrible to someday be embarrassed by the chips. These aren't quite as LOUD as I would like now, but I know that in 5 years I will still be happy with them.
