Only problem with just calling is you leave it open for suck outs. I think a reraise would have been the best thing to do there to feel the player out see how he reacts to your over the top move.

As for what he has in the whole well I would put him on A,X. Thing that I would be thinking is why the pot size bets untill the river then a lesser bet on the last better street. Is he hoping for a reraise and tring to show alittle weekness, or does he feel that hes beat and knows you will call anybet that he makes and is to scared to go all in with the hopes that you will fold.

Its kinda hard to tell off of one hand as to what he might have. Since you have been playing at the table with him for a bit you would know or have a good idea of the hands he has been playing and how he has been playing them.
