Funny that you ask...I went through a period where i was over-oiling, really drowning them, and then letting the oil soak in for 15 min or so, and then wiping them off, however I noticed what appeared to be wetness behind the label, around the rim of inlay. Its no big deal, I think its already dried (i did this on about 20 or so chips) but now I lightly oil a few at a time, and only let it sit for a minute or two before removing the excess and drying.

Sorry to hear about this. I did my 2005 JB the way I mentioned and had no problems at all; they look great... I also did this with a bunch of BlueChips that I had and again, great results...

Before PCOL said they'd oil mine for me I was seriously worried a bit about how I would oil nearly 2 thousand chips. I wouldn't be able to play with them only partially cleaned up! I put a lot of thought into how I'd get the job done in one sitting of oiling and one sitting of cleanup.

The method I devised seems like a really great idea to me, and here's how it went:

ingredients: 2 pieces fake chamois (I used samples I got free from the local auto show) ; mineral oil (on the cheap from ikea) ; thin brownie pan (or comparable piece of anything, even a plate might work) ; tons of paper bags

1 - lay one chamois in pan.
2 - barely saturate chamois with mineral oil
3 - dump x chips in pan ; x = however many you can work with at once
4 - mix well, touching all rolling edges to the chamois, quickly but thoroughly. chamois will act as a way to wick oil to all surfaces of the chip with minimal mess and minimal time.
5 - tear bags into sheets
6 - remove and line chips up on bags, edge to touch next chip's inlay cap (the inlay caps don't require the oil in the first place). the paper bags will absorb excess oil but not necessarily mop it up immediately like a paper towel. don't worry about removing tacky oil.
7 - check chamois and add oil
8 - repeat 1-7 until all chips on bags
(sitting 2)
9 - grab clean chamois, rub chips a little, to dry off, case up.

It seems to me that you don't need to age chips overnight in oil, nor even for anything longer than a few minutes. Oil will not penetrate by leaving it on the chip, but only by actually rubbing it into the surface of the checks with a cloth. Rub it in, wipe it off. The oil almost immediately fills the porous surface of the chip when oil is applied and rubbed in, and for good measure it will get smeared around again when it's wiped off.

Do you think it's possible to put the chips on a cookie sheet and bake them in the oven at about 200 for 10 minutes? That should replace having to let them sit out so long to dry and I can't imagine that 200 degrees would hurt them.

Has anyone tried anything like that?

Before you stick them in the oven, you may want to read this thread:

http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2323

Specifically, look for the posting by jimb. I've no doubt he's right about warping happening at 140 degrees or above. That thread is about ASM's but I would be willing to bet the same type of care should be applied to other types of clay chips.

Back to the subject of oiling......I wonder if perhaps people are using too much oil? When I oiled my 540 ASM circle/squares I used just two cloths. One with a tiny bit of oil on it and another one that was just a clean dry cloth. I wiped each chip... doing about 15 - 20 at a time. I let them sit for 10 or 15 minutes, then simply wiped each one dry with the 2nd cloth. I have had no excess oil showing up on the chips. In fact, they don't appear or feel oily in any way. They simply have a nice matte luster to them.

Later,
AB

finally finished oiling. Im thinking it took a total of 8-9 hours for 1000 chips.
Im really pleased with how they came out. The $500 & $1000 chips really came out well, the orange chip is my least favorite, but the oil really brings out the edge spots.
birdcage is filled, big tourney on tuesday night.
it'll be sweeeet.

When I oiled my first set of 800 chips (Trademark "classics"), I did them one at a time with a cloth and it took forever.

When I got my 1000+ Pharoah's, I got them done in almost no time at all. (I received them Friday after work, went to a party, came back and by Saturday morning they were done...and I didn't stay up all night!)

Here's my new approach.

1) Using a large table
2) Lay a towel across the table (beach towels are big)
3) Lay the chips next to each other on the towel
4) Using a small paint roller, put the oil on the roller
5) Roll the chips so that the chips are wet, but not soaked.
6) Repeat 4 & 5 until all chips are oiled.
7) Let them sit for at least 5 minutes (more if you like)
Flip all the chips over
9) Repeat 4 thru 7

Now you have options, using a second towel
1) Wipe the chips down one by one, or
2) Wipe & drag the chips across the towel on the table before doing #1. This is my preferred method. It wipes a lot of oil off before using the "finishing" cloth.

Focus on getting all the oil off the label.

The chips can now be either put away, or layed out for some air drying. As far as I can tell, there's no real difference.

Of note, I found that the outer edges got oiled without having to do anything more. Either the roller touched them and/or the soaking in too care of them.

As I was finishing up, I thought that I should have taken pictures of the process for everyone, but it was too late. It was cool seeing all those chips layed side-by-side...almost better than big stacks...definitely different.

If you have questions about this method, let me know.

Michael

It took me and a buddy about 4 hours to do 1200. I didn't even bother doing the whites because it wasn't noticeable.

That's a tough question, who really times themselves on how long it takes to oil their chips, just seems to be a pleasure to do when you have nothing to do. In general i would say around an hour for two racks of chips depending on how anal you are in drying off or should i say wiping off your oiled chips, I usually do sixty chips oiled at once per drum but then have to dry them one at a time usually while watching a movie and placing them in a rack one at a time until a rack is finished. the biggest part of the whole process is the wiping off part, and everyone is different as to how much time they spend on this part of the task, so just enjoy the labor of love as we call it, and your chips will be better for it in the long run, oh yea the thought of letting all that nasty finger oil be the first kind of oil to soak into any chip gives me the heebee--geebee's ! First let your chips have the good stuff, then it will be easier to get rid of the nasties later on as time passes!" IMHO!"

I oiled 1,120 Pharaoh's Club chips over the course of watching the entire 5th season of the Sopranos (13hrs +/-). This included blasting them with compressed air beforehand and then applying the oil and drying them individually. I typically did a rack of 100 or so at each sitting.

Time well spent as they now look their best - particularly the reds, blacks, purples, and oranges!

Cool Re: Consensus on Time it takes to Oil Your Set

I now oil 100 chips at a time. I put some mineral oil on my fingers and rub every portion of the chip. Next i'lI sit them out on a towel until I have all 100 oiled. Once this is finished, I then take a clean terry cloth and wipe off the excess oil and put each chip back into the rack. I can do 100 chips in an hour. I enjoy the time spent doing this. I've tried the "dump all the chips into Mineral oil" method and I find that my new way is faster and less messy with the same results.......Popping colors. I just ordered some spoon oil that is a mixture of Mineral oil and beeswax to try on my chips as well.
