Maybe this has been done, or can't be done for some reason.
What if one of us registered a legitimate business whose primary purpose was to facilitate group buys? That way would would have the tax ID number and whatever else manufacturers required to sell at a wholesale level.
Kind of like a food cooperative if anyone is familiar with that.
I don't know the technical in's and out's of such an undertaking, but I'd be willing to look into it if there was support from others.

Bad, bad idea. All that does is lead to custom chips that are made for the purpose of selling a sh*tload for profit instead of taking in the opinions of everyone involved to make a chip they all like. I know that "x's business wouldn't be like that!" but all businesses are like that... it always happens.

In other words, no one would be making a profit off of this (like the current group buys), but people might be able to get the chips for as much as $.20 less a chip.

it would be more of a "non-profit organization" then a business. Kinda like the Masons |

I think you completely missed the entire point of the original post.

Exactly! The sole purpose of this business' existence would be to get wholesale pricing. As far as I'm concerned, chips would be only ordered as needed and resold at their exact cost.
As I first noted, I'm not sure of the technicalities, but I was thinking something along the lines of each person who wanted to be part of it being a shareholder or member of some sort.
Again, if there's enough interest, I'll take the time to figure out the details.

I have expressed some interest in facilitating a Chipco Group buy in the near future to a few folks. It really does not make allot of sense from a business standpoint but I really enjoy the idea of a community of like minded collectors getting together like this for something unique to that group. I am not sure it would be worth the time or effort for an individual to setup up such an entity.

I believe a not-for-profit business has to fill out tax forms and such regularly, so you gotta decide if its worth all the headaches involved. Either that or you gotta pay taxes on everything you buy.

What makes doing your own group buy fun is that you're designing and promoting a chip that you want. I can't see how you could have the same enthusiasm doing this when you aren't really interested in it.
