I run a weekly game with a 10,000 chip buy in comprising of the following.(You can work down from 10,000 if you want to use 1,000 - but I wouldn't recommend less than 40 chips per player (although I recently hear of one regular game starting with 16. The idea of a game it to entertain people - that way they come back. 16 chips is not that entertaining in my humble opinion.

50 x 100 chips
10 x 500 chips

for up to 10 players.

For 11 top 30 players we use

30 x 100 chips
10 x 500 chips
3 x 1000 chips

Blinds schedule is usually

100 - 200 (45 mins)
200 - 400 (45mins)
300 - 500 (45 mins)
break
500 - 1000 (30 mins)
700 - 1400 (30 mins)
800 - 1600 (30 mins)
break - and remove 100 chips 1000's with a chip race for odd 100's
1000 - 2000 (30 mins)
1500 - 3000 (30 mins)
2000 - 4000 (30 mins)
3000 - 6000 (30 mins)
4000 - 5000 (30 mins)
5000 - 6000 (30 mins)

that's 7 1/2 hours - but the game has never lasted more than 5 hours with 16 players or more than 8 hours with 30.
