Chips: 63.9 Bank: 0.0 Total Chips: 63.9 | | | Anyone use REAL casino chips for their home game?
Okay - I am in love with Bud Jones chips, especially the "Speed Chips" that they use for the WSOP. The only card room of I know of that uses these is Canterbury, and they are not available for the home market.
I'm thinking about picking up 1k of the $1 Canterbury chips to use as $1 chips in my home game in Minneapolis.
I have no concern about people bringing chips in or taking them out, as they're worth $1 either way.
I guess my only concern is always having to keep an eye on the chips. We usually have 30 guys in a tournament, and then start playing cash games afterwards. The chips for the side game (just cheap 6 stripe 8g chips now) are just sitting out, and when there are enough players, they get it going. I guess I'd be VERY uncomfortable leaving out $1k worth of real chips that someone could just snag and drive 20 minutes and cash 'em in at Canterbury. We're all friends, so I guess I don't see that as a real issue, but there are some that wouldn't have a problem kyping 20 bucks worth or some such. What I'm saying, is that I'd most likely have to keep an eye on them at all times and be bank at all times. Is this worth it?
Anyone else try this with any success or failure?

It sounds like a risky proposition when you consider that you believe it is possible for some of your "friends" would relieve you of some of your chips. I think it's probably best if you just head over to the casino when you want to play with the real deal.
To answer your original question: no, I don't use real casino chips nor am I aware of anyone who does.

if that's too much risk, use dice chips. then no one'd want to steal them. but...people could get them for 10c each, and cash them in at your home game for $1 or $5.
do you see my point? as host of the game, chip security is up to you. i think the better way to go is get nicer/more secure chips, and then be in charge of them. that means they don't sit out, and the only person that gives them out/takes them back is you. it's worth it to not get ripped off, and to have a game where the money adds up at the end of the night.

If you're trying to get chips from an actual casino just keep in mind that the dealers and cashiers won't give you many of those chips as they have policies about letting players walk around with too many chips of one color. The tables will try to color you out before you walk away. The casino's know the value of their chips and if a 50 cent chip costs them $1 then they will only let you get your hands on what you can manage to win at the tables. They won't care as much if you walk away with lots of $5 or higher chips (that is if you got them legitimately from a table).
One thing you can try is as you get one of those chips put them in your pocket. If the casino complains that all chips must remain on the table then just do what you can to not use those lower denom chips and don't let the dealer color them up later.
Just don't expect a dealer or cashier to let you buy a big stack of those chips and walk away.

Anyone else try this with any success or failure? | Are you using them for cash games or tourneys? If you're using them for cash games, you don't really need to worry. Assuming they're paying up front when they're buying in, if they take off with your chips, you still have their cash.

The cashiers should be able to sell you a rack of chips if they're not busy. Go there in the early morning and pick up a rack is better than going there at night trying to buy a rack when there are 30 people behind you waiting to cash out.

I use chips that I got from an active casino. I dont use them for tourneys tho, only cash at cash value. If any of them walk out, Im even. I only use Chipco's Oysters or Egyptians for tourneys, because they are replaceable. My only -EV on chips is if I use $.25 chips. NO matter which ones I use, I would still be in the hole if any were pocketed. As soon as just ONE chip dissappears, the .25/.50 cent blinds are HISTORY! Use active casino chips and make the blinds 1/2. I would if I lived closer to a real casino, but I dont so I use a mix of real and fantasy. Most of my idiot friends dont realize that I paid $1 for each of the 100 Aladdin chips. DUH!

I just ordered a custom set of chipcos for my tournament set. This set would be strictly for cash games.
Thanks for the advice guys...sounds like this will work as long as I am the only one in charge of them throughout the evening. They will be $1 chips and will be used as such during our games. So, if people bring in or take out, no biggie.

when it comes to cash games at my house i am the only one that has access to the chips. i actually use the locking mechanism on the cheapo aluminum cases i have. i trust everyone i play with, but it just makes sense to be on top of the accounting otherwise YOU will be the one that loses money at the end of the night.
