900 chips breakdown for Cash and Tournament

Hey guys, Im going to buy 900 Desert Sands NJ chips and want to split the set in order for it to facilitate our 20 Cash games we play with .25c 1$ and 5$ chips and also make a tournament set. I havent hosted any yet but will be in the near future. What breakdown would you recommend for the cash game and tournament. The denoms they offer are .25c, .50c, 1$, 5, 25, 100, 500, 1000.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll let someone else give you a great answer on the exact breakdown. But I want to stress to only buy $25 through $1000 for your tourney set. Too many denoms in one tourney is not wise/needed.

Four denoms should be plenty for up to 50-man tourneys. If you plan on hosting a 200+ tourney, or one that spans days, maybe higher chips will be needed, but not likely. If so, get $5000 and up, dont add $5 or $1.

Plus, having $25 as the smallest tourney chip allows you to safely use $5 and down as cash chips at the same time. This is very common in tourneys wherever I go, because if I get knocked out early, THERE WILL BE a cash game, I guarantee it.

Is it just me or is anyone esle a little leary/uneasy about using a "not totally custom" chip for cash games that has a denom value higher than the cost of a chip. I mean if you have a $5 cash game chip that anyone can buy online for about $1 each (or even less) it could open a can o worms... Even in a "friends only" game, cash changes the way people think and act.

Also I prefer to have two totally different chip styles when having a cash game and tournament running at the same time. It just avoids confusion. I plan to keep my cheap set of chips to use for side cash games during tournaments... and buy the Pharaoh set so I can use the same small subset for either cash or tourney (1/100 rule for cash game only nights).

Personally I can't justify doubling the amount I'm spending on high end chips just to have the full range of denoms to run simultaneous cash and tourney games with the same chips..... Wish I had the luxury cause there's no such thing as having too many nice chips around!

Here's a pretty good breakdown I'm happy with for 1000 chips for cash and tournaments.

Cash
0.25 (and $2 chip if non-denom for a 2-4 game) = 200
$1 = 200
$5 = 100

Tourney
$25 = 200
$100 = 180 or 160
$500 = 80
$1000 = 40 or 60

I don't have my spreadsheet here, but this tourney breakdown allows for $2000 starting chips in a Foxwoods structure with 20 greens and 15 blacks to start for 10 people with enough chips to color up. Or around 20 people with 8green, 8 black and 2 purple to start. It's also flexible enough to have a WSOP type event with 10,000 starting chips (12,7,3,2 + 1 blank as a $5000 chip) for at least 16 players if not more, I don't remember offhand.

Well for my Pharoahs tournament set I like this breakdown:

Total chips:---------------: Max initial chips in play:
250-Red = T1250 :--------: T1250
200-Green = T5000:-------: T3750 -> T1250 left over for coloring up reds
100-Black = T10000:------: T5000 -> T5000 left over for coloring up greens
30-Purple = T15000
20-Orange =T20000
600 total chips

Players : Starting stacks
5 : T2000
6 : T1600
7 : T1400
8 : T1200
9 : T1000
10 : T1000

With this set I can distribute 5-red 3-green and 1-black for every T200 and color ups should work pretty well. For example, for a 10 man tournament each player starts with T1000 (25-red, 15-green 5-black). All 250 reds are in play but only 150 greens are. Those remaining 50 greens can color up all the reds in play. Also, the remaining 50 blacks not in play are enough to color up all the greens. The extra purples and oranges give me more than enough chips for 3 rebuys per player.

For a 900 chip set, that leaves 300 chips for whites and blues, and with the 250 reds I would have a top heavy 550 chip cash set. I may go for 1000 total chips, just so I can have two racks each of blue and white, and have a workable 650 chip cash set.

P.S. This is why the blue NCV is great. It can be a $3 dollar chip for 3/6, a $2 dollar for 2/4, a 50 cent chip for .50/1, etc. Screw the NJs bro, get the Pharoahs!!!

I wish I could but the price may be a little to much for me. I was in for the Pharohs intil the non-denom thing was disclosed by Paulson. I could of used them for Cash and Tournamnet but now I cant justify buying 1000 paulsons for my weekly games, its just to much money for me.

The NJ's are 400 bucks for 900 chips. Not bad, I still might hold off to see the Pharohs and the holdempokerchips.com clay set they are going to reveal soon. Depending on price I may do that.

The Mardi Gras are gonna be very cool, but are gonna cost you $1.25 a peice I bet. And after the group by of the Pharaoh's, they will also be $1.25 retail (or more!).

I don't think people are realizing the great deal that the Pharaoh's Clubs are. It'll become apparent once the group is done.

(I know a LOT of us realize the value, almost 50,000 chips worth at least. )
